Choosing a restaurant POS system in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region

Restaurants and cafés in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region serve guests in Arabic, Kurdish and English, often price in US dollars, and are growing fast into chains. A POS system built for one language and one currency quickly gets in the way. This guide lists what to check.

Languages: Arabic, Kurdish and English

Your staff and your guests may not share a language. Look for a POS whose screens work in Arabic and Kurdish (Sorani and Kurmanji) with right-to-left layout, and whose QR menu lets each guest choose their language.

Currency and pricing

Check that prices, receipts and reports work in the currency you actually charge in, and that the subscription price is clear up front: monthly fee, per-branch fee, setup fee and lock-in.

Multi-branch from day one

Many successful venues open a second and third branch quickly. Choose a system where each branch has its own menu and prices, staff see only their own branch, and head office sees every branch's sales on one screen.

Kitchen and service

A busy kitchen needs orders split by station — grill, cold kitchen, bar — with timing visible, either on paper tickets or on a kitchen screen. Waiters should take orders at the table on phones or tablets instead of walking to the kitchen.

Hardware you already have

A cloud POS that runs in the browser works on the laptops, phones and tablets you already own; an 80 mm ESC/POS thermal printer covers receipts and the kitchen. Avoid systems that lock you into buying their devices.

Stock and cost

With recipe-based stock, every sale deducts its ingredients, so you know the real cost of each dish and spot waste early — important when ingredient prices move.
